BALASORE: A 1,000 kg glide bomb designed and developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was successfully tested in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha on Friday.
The bomb was dropped by an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft. Defence sources said the bomb, guided by its ‘on board navigation system’ glided for nearly 100 km before hitting the target with great precision.
The flight of the glide bomb was monitored by radars and electro-optic systems stationed at the Chandipur-based Integrated Test Range (ITR).
Multiple DRDO laboratories including Bangalore-based Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and Chandigarh-based Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) with Research Centre Imarat (RCI) at Hyderabad as the nodal laboratory have contributed towards development of the glide bomb.
Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and DRDO Chief AvinashChander has congratulated all the members involved in the mission including the Air force team who have contributed in the success. He said the nation now has capability to design, develop and launch heavy bombs for delivery up to 100 km away with high precision.
Director of RCI G Satheesh Reddy said the successful test once again proved that the country has now become self-reliant in the area of guided precision bombs. The complete avionics package and navigation system has been designed and developed by RCI.

One Ton bomb coasting to 100 km on glide path without any propulsion and then hitting on dot is what any air force can only dream of -but now it is in realm of reality! Great achievement by any yardstick indeed. Now effort should be to focus on type of targets and specialised bombs for terminal effectiveness. Would need deep penetrators for highly protected targets, sub-munition/ child store types for runways etc -this can be decided with the ops staff. DRDO and IAF should jointly celebrate this great success story which comes once in a while. The glide bomb must find place of pride in the DRDO/IAF Tablue on 26 Jan 2015 with honours to the team.
